Amazing Albany

As part of the Kidspot #voices2015 program, bloggers were asked to share their best three family-friendly things to do in their corner of Australia for a ‘Put Yourself on the Map’ and #shareaustralia challenge.

My home ‘town’ (technically we’re a city) of Albany, Western Australia has no shortage of great places and things to explore, so today I posted my entry on Instagram – here is a more lengthy version including some links!

1. Whale Watching

Whale Watching Albany

During the whale migration season from June through to September, Humpback and Southern Right whales are able to be seen from our shores. They head to the coast for calving and mating in the warmer waters.

There are an abundance of lookouts on shore from where the whales can be seen (binoculars are optional), or you can take one of the whale watching boat cruises to get up nice and close. One of the best, the Rotary Lookout (pictured above) is located on Marine Drive, only a few minutes from the City centre.

2. Heritage Park

National ANZAC Centre Albany

The Mount Clarence and Mount Adelaide areas received a wonderful makeover in the leadup to the ANZAC Centenary Commemorations that were held in November last year, as Albany was the departure point for all of the troops that headed overseas to fight in WW1. It was the last glimpse of Australia for many of the soldiers who sadly never returned home.

The historic Princess Royal Fortress, along with the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial (site of the first ever dawn service) were all revamped. The jewel in the crown was the construction of the National ANZAC Centre (pictured above), a definite must-see!

3. Beach Combing

Beachcombing 4 Albany

It is no lie that there is a beach for every wind direction in Albany. Even on a cool winter day you can find protected cove or stretch of beach for a little beach combing on the squeaky white sand. A great activity for the kids, to get some fresh air and exercise. Take the dog, too!

A favourite of our family is to collect shells with tiny holes and then string them up with some fishing line once we’re home as a nice keepsake.

The hardest part is deciding which beach to visit!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little peek at the place where I live. There’s plenty of more great things to see and do, it was hard to narrow it down to just 3!
